In past years, Lafayette Parish has repeatedly ranked among the top three parishes for roadway accidents caused by alcohol. A recent program implemented in Lafayette has shown to be effective in decreasing such crashes
]]> Ten parishes, including Lafayette, were chosen to take part in the Knowledge Effect, a pilot program that was formed in 2007. The parishes involved are recipients of a grant from the Department of Health and Hospitals. Since the program launched, major strides have been made.The coalition formed a partnership with the Lafayette Police Department in order to reorganize the department's Alcohol Traffic Action Campaign. Since that time, the number of impaired driving arrests has increased from 211 in 2007 to 1,144 in 2011. More importantly, the number of fatal alcohol crashes has decreased from 24 in 2007 to just 11 in 2010.
Although the results of the pilot program are impressive, the incidence of traffic accidents could still be decreased. Auto accidents can cause long-term physical and emotional damage to the individuals involved. In the worst cases, these accidents sometimes even result in death. Hopefully, with the help of programs like the Knowledge Effect the number of crashed in Lafayette will continue to drop.
